Asia and the Pacific Islands

GHI is funded by AusAID to establish and develop partnerships between public and private entities to improve food quality and availability, and dramatically improve health, educational achievement, productivity and wealth and reduce the burden of chronic diseases and disability in countries in Asia and the Pacfic. Key global program strategies include:
- Enrichment of wheat flour and rice with iron and folic acid in Asia and the Pacific.
- Vitamin and mineral enrichment of salt (iodine), rice (iron, zinc and B vitamins) and cooking oils (Vitamin A) in 22 Pacific Island countries.
- Working with the food industry and food regulators in Pacific Island countries to reduce salt, harmful fats and calories in foods produced and imported in the Pacific Region.
- Initiating and supporting multi-sectorial dialogues addressing food security, quality and availability. The Pacific Regional Food Summits have successfully engaged governments from the 22 Pacific Island countries, health professionals, food industry representatives and international agencies to work together to address issues related to food and security.
